Service Description

Pottery is messy, creative, sometimes unpredictable—and incredibly satisfying. This 7-week studio class is designed for ages 12 and up (6th grade+) and gives students the chance to explore clay in a way that’s both skill-building and genuinely fun. We’ll work on the potter’s wheel and explore hand building techniques like pinch, coil, and slab construction. Students will learn how to center and shape clay on the wheel, refine their forms, experiment with surface design, and glaze their finished pieces. Because this is a full seven-week session, students have time to grow. They’ll practice, improve, troubleshoot, and see real progress from week to week. Along the way, they’ll build patience, creative problem-solving skills, and confidence as they turn raw clay into finished work they’re proud to bring home. No experience is needed—just a willingness to try something new, get your hands dirty, and embrace the occasional “wonky” moment (which is often where the best ideas happen). This class is a space to create, experiment, and make something that feels uniquely yours. All materials and firings are included in class fee. Clay Studio meets on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30, beginning March 18th and ending on April 29th. For the final class, students will participate in our own version of “Show and Tell” and then pack up their work to take home! Please review the "Studio Policies" listed on the "Studio Handbook" tab on the website. Instructor: Sassy Smyth Sassy Smyth is a local potter and has always been a lover of handmade pottery, but it wasn’t until the world began reopening after covid that she finally signed up for her first class at Create Pottery Studio. She quickly fell in love with both the process and the craft of pottery, diving headfirst into learning on the wheel and through hand building. Before long, nearly all of her free time was spent experimenting, practicing, and deepening her understanding of clay. Teaching classes and workshops brings together two of her favorite things: helping others and making pottery. She loves creating an encouraging, welcoming environment where students feel comfortable trying new things, embracing mistakes, and learning even when things don’t go as planned — because that’s where so much of the magic happens in pottery. She is drawn to learning and sharing knowledge and truly enjoys getting to share her love of making and learning with others!!
